Implants, All-on-4, veneers: treatments explained simply

What each treatment is, how it goes in Madrid, and the questions to ask the dentist.

These explanations are here to help you understand. They do not replace a dentist's opinion: after seeing your file, the dentist says which treatment suits you.

The implant

A small screw, usually titanium, placed in the bone in place of the root of a lost tooth. After a few months of healing, an abutment and then a crown are fixed on it: the tooth you see, made to measure.

What is an All-on-4 / All-on-6?

It is a complete row of fixed teeth, in one piece, upper or lower: it is called a bridge. It is screwed onto 4 implants (All-on-4) or 6 implants (All-on-6) placed in the jawbone. It does not come out like a denture: only the dentist can unscrew it, for a check-up for example.

The diagrams show how it works. The number of implants depends on your bone: the dentist decides.

How it usually goes

Before you leave, the dentist studies your X-ray, then sends a written quote, which I translate. Then, three steps:

Diagram: the 3 steps of an All-on-4 or All-on-6

  1. 1st stay

    Implants placed, fixed temporary bridge

    The dentist places the implants. Usually you leave with fixed temporary teeth the same day or within a few days, if the dentist thinks it is possible.

  2. At home

    3 to 6 months of healing

    The bone bonds with the implants. You live normally, with your temporary teeth. I stay in touch and keep the link with the clinic.

  3. 2nd stay

    The final bridge

    A shorter stay. The dentist screws in the final bridge, made to measure for you.

Every case is different: the dentist gives you the exact timeline with the quote.

All-on-4 or All-on-6: which one?

All-on-4

4 implants: 2 straight at the front, 2 tilted at the back.

Often suggested when there is less bone at the back of the jaw. The tilted implants make the most of the bone available, which can avoid a bone graft.

Indicative price in Madrid: €7,000 – €12,000 per arch.

All-on-6

6 implants spread along the whole arch.

Often suggested when there is enough bone along the whole jaw. The bridge then rests on more implants.

Indicative price in Madrid: €9,000 – €15,000 per arch.

Either way, the result is the same for you: a row of fixed teeth, screwed in, that does not come out like a denture. Usually in two stays. My fee is the same: €990 for one arch.

Who decides?

Always the clinic’s dentist, after a 3D scan of your jaw: the amount of bone decides the number of implants. I give no medical advice. I translate the dentist’s explanations and ask your questions.

The veneer

A thin ceramic shell, bonded to the front of a damaged, worn or stained tooth. The natural tooth stays in place. Usually one stay is enough.

Questions to ask the dentist

I help you ask them, and translate the answers:

  • How many implants, and why that number in my case?
  • Which brand of implants? Will you give me their references?
  • Which temporary teeth, and for how long?
  • Which permanent teeth, in which material?
  • Is any extra treatment needed (extractions, bone graft, scan)?
  • Which check-ups after I go home, and when?
  • What happens if there is a problem after treatment?

What the quote should state

  • the temporary teeth and the permanent teeth;
  • the materials (implants, prosthesis);
  • any extra treatment (extractions, graft, scan);
  • payment, stage by stage.

I check with you that everything is there, and ask the clinic if anything is missing.
